Rent a Bike and Feed Another is an event that took place on May 1st, 2019 organized by Beirut By Bike, a Lebanese bicycle rental service, in collaboration with the Lebanese Food Bank in order to help those who cannot afford to feed themselves. My sister and I were very excited to take a bunch of our friends with us to take part in this event and to encourage a healthier lifestyle as well. We had already made the plan to leave the house at around 8 AM so that we could start biking around Beirut by 8:30 AM.LO6: Attending this event with many of my friends and renting multiple bikes would help the

However, the night before the event, our volleyball coach sent us a message informing us that our volleyball training was to be rescheduled to an earlier time due to an inconvenience regarding the booking of the court (it was initially at 4:30 PM, but it was changed to 9 AM). Thus, seeing that we could not attend both plans and we could not miss our practice, we had to cancel the biking event. I was devastated and I almost felt as though I had disappointed the poor families that my friends and I could have at least tried to help by renting the bikes on that day. This absurd idea that filled my head with guilt was what I later realized to be just an exaggeration as a result of overthinking; it made me feel much better thinking that many other people will be attending this event and the families in need will receive the help needed from others either way. Following my volleyball training that day I was reminded once again why I chose to commit to this team in the first place: they were my second family and one of my main sources of motivation. I realized that making a sacrifice such as the one I had to make on that day is the whole point of commitment and perseverance.
Learning Outcomes Achieved:
LO4: Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences.
I was unable to attend this event due to my commitment to my volleyball team practice.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
This event was organized in order to help those who could not afford to buy food, an issue demonstrated in many places all around the world.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
Making the choice to attend my volleyball practice instead of this event has made me question the ethicality of my decision. However, I weighed out the consequences and was able to make the decision I felt was right.
