Through this experience, I hope to be able to emphasize the importance of being aware of your body and your health to my classmates and to the teachers attending. Furthermore, by planning this experience I will be reinforcing my managing and planning skills. By doing so, I would also be overcoming my stress barrier when it comes to public speaking and talking to strangers without getting shy.
Intended learning Outcome (s)
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
How I intend to reach the identified Learning Outcome(s)
LO3: By being in charge of logistics and planning before and during the presentation.
LO5: By working collaboratively with the Lebanese Cancer Foundation
LO6: Spreading awareness about breast cancer, which is a common type of breast cancer, which many women are unaware of at its early stages due to lack of knowledge of its symptoms and treatments. Also, this could aim to reduce the stigma of breast cancer and encourage women to get the treatments required.

Breast Cancer Awareness Presentation

The LBCF is a non-profit, awareness, educational, fundraising initiative established in 2011 by Dr. Nagi Saghir at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) and a group of women who survived breast cancer or had close relatives surviving it.

Step 1:

Get approval from the school board for the activity

After the proposal was approved by my CAS coordinator, the project also had to be approved by the school since it would be taking place within school premises.

Step 2:

Logistics

I decided that it would be more appropriate to target a female audience since breast cancer mostly affects women. Also, to spread even more awareness, the audience would be allowed to wear pink as it is internationally known to be the color which represents breast cancer. To fit an audience of around 80 people, the best place for the presentation to take place would be in the auditorium, where the presenters could use a projector for the powerpoint and the audience could fit comfortably in the room. It was also suggested by the LBCF that they would bring pink ribbons to give to the audience for both engagement and awareness.

Step 3:

Call the organization to find available dates and times for which the presentation could take place

When I called the Lebanese Breast Cancer Foundation, I was given 5 potential dates which I could choose from, depending on what was more suitable for me, and additional details as well. The presentation last for approximately 1 hour, including activities and introduction. The organization also informed me that two doctors from AUBMC (American University of Beirut Medical Center), Doctor Lana Khalil and Doctor Rola Atwani, will be giving the school the Breast Cancer Awareness presentation at 10 AM on October 24th, 2019. The date was chosen as such since it is during the month of October, which is breast cancer awareness month, and it is a suitable date for the school as well. I was also asked to prepare an introductory speech to inform the audience of the organization, its purpose, and to introduce the doctors.

Step 4:

Publicize the presentation using flyers and other methods

I had to coordinate with the school's social media secretary to find the best method to publicize this event and to target the right audience for it (the presentation targets females of ages 17-18 and adults such as mothers, teachers, staff, etc.). She advised me to make a digital flyer that could be published on the school's TVs and that could also be posted on the school website. This was the final product:

"Khamse w bass": LBCF has launched a nationwide Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign titled “Just five." LBCF representatives will bring a donation box to collect 5,000 LBP from interested attendees as a donation to assist patients in need during their treatment.

The slogan for the event was chosen to be: "a few minutes for a lifetime," which highlights the importance of being aware of breast cancer and its symptoms, as explained by the professionals during the presentation, which could save a life by preventing the development of the disease at an early stage.

Step 5:

Event Day

The next step was the actual presentation. However, in light of the country's unforeseen circumstances which led roads all over the country to be blocked and protesters to riot on the streets for weeks, the presentation was cancelled. I was very disappointed that I could not exploit this experience to others, since it would have been very beneficial for all women to be more aware of the symptoms of a very common disease. I had prepared all that needed to be organized and all that was left was for the presentation to actually take place. Since I usually get a little anxious before speaking to an audience, I had rehearsed my introduction almost a hundred times. I also made sure I had a pink shirt to wear the day of the presentation. The flyers were going to be posted all over the school only a day after the protests began. This was very unexpected, and I was very sad that this opportunity could not be utilized, but I really hope for the best for my country. I hope that the protests will bring a brighter future for Lebanon.

Learning Outcomes Achieved:
LO3: This experience was initiated and planned by me. Unfortunately, the event could not take place, but all the logistics were prepared and arranged with coordination with the LBCF.
LO6: Breast cancer is a disease which commonly targets at least 1 in 10 women every year. Bringing awareness to the importance of recognizing its symptoms and ways to treat it could possibly save a life.
